Five drives to plan around
Sete Cidades
The famous twin lakes inside a volcanic crater, west of Ponta Delgada. Several viewpoints are close to the road, but the drive is only worth it on a clear day.
Lagoa do Fogo
A crater lake in the centre of the island, reached by a mountain road with spectacular views. At busy times, this area can be closed to private cars, with a shuttle service in place, so check the current rules before setting off.
Furnas
Hot springs, steaming fumaroles, thermal gardens and the traditional cozido cooked underground by volcanic heat. Allow a full day if you want to combine the village, the lake and a swim in the thermal pools.
Ribeira Grande and the north coast
Surf beaches, the town of Ribeira Grande and the Gorreana tea plantation, one of the few tea estates in Europe.
Nordeste
The quiet, green northeast of the island, with lookouts and gardens along the road. The drive is long and winding, so plan it as a relaxed day out rather than a quick detour.
Driving tips for São Miguel
- Weather. The Azores weather changes quickly, especially in the mountains. Check forecasts and live webcams, such as those on SpotAzores, before driving up to a lake viewpoint, and have a backup plan for cloudy days.
- Rural roads. They can be narrow, with farm vehicles and occasionally cows on the road, so keep your speed down and take particular care in fog.
- Fuel and valuables. Fill up the tank before heading to remote areas, stick to the roads permitted by your rental agreement and never leave valuables visible in a parked car.
