From 1 June 2026, a new usage fee applies to rent-a-car contracts in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This fee is established by Regional Legislative Decree No. 7/2025/M, of 4 December 2025, under Article 10.
This is not a RentX extra service, hidden cost, or optional add-on. It is a mandatory legal charge applicable to rented vehicles in Madeira.

What Is the Madeira Rent-a-Car Usage Fee?
The Madeira rent-a-car usage fee is a regional legal charge applied to each rented vehicle.
It applies to vehicle rental contracts in Madeira and is calculated according to the number of complete rental days stated in the rental agreement.
This fee is collected by the rent-a-car company and must be shown separately on the invoice or receipt issued in the customer’s name.
How Much Is the Usage Fee?
The usage fee is calculated as follows:
- €2.00 per full day, meaning each complete 24-hour rental period
- Charged up to a maximum of 10 days per rental contract
- Maximum standard amount: €20.00 per contract
For zero-emission vehicles, the amount is reduced:
- €1.00 per full day
- Charged up to a maximum of 10 days per rental contract
- Maximum amount for zero-emission vehicles: €10.00 per contract
This means that even if your rental period is longer than 10 days, the usage fee is only charged up to the legal maximum of 10 days.
Example of the Madeira Usage Fee
If you rent a standard vehicle for 3 full days, the usage fee will be:
3 days x €2.00 = €6.00
If you rent a standard vehicle for 7 full days, the usage fee will be:
7 days x €2.00 = €14.00
If you rent a standard vehicle for 12 full days, the usage fee will be capped at:
10 days x €2.00 = €20.00
For zero-emission vehicles, the same logic applies, but the amount is €1.00 per full day, up to a maximum of €10.00 per contract.
Is This Fee Included in the Reservation Price?
The Madeira usage fee is a separate mandatory legal charge.
It is not part of the base rental price unless expressly stated during the booking process. The fee is added to the total amount payable and is shown separately on the invoice or receipt issued in the customer’s name.

Does the Fee Apply to Funchal and Madeira Airport Pickups?
Yes. The usage fee is related to the rental contract and applies to rented vehicles in Madeira.
This means it may apply to RentX reservations with pickup locations such as:
- Funchal Center
- Madeira Airport
- Other RentX pickup locations in Madeira
The fee is not connected only to one pickup point. It applies because the vehicle rental takes place in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Why Is This Fee Being Charged?
The fee was introduced by the regional legislation that regulates the activity of renting passenger vehicles without a driver in Madeira.
Its purpose is to form part of the legal framework for rent-a-car activity in the region. Rent-a-car companies operating in Madeira are required to apply the fee according to the law.
For customers, the most important point is simple: from 1 June 2026, this fee becomes part of applicable car rental contracts in Madeira.
