Madeira Events: What's On in the Next Few Weeks (and How to Get There by Car)

Madeira Events: What's On in the Next Few Weeks (and How to Get There by Car)

The biggest Madeira events between now and mid-December 2026 are the chestnut festival (ending 1 November), the Santa Cruz food-and-music weekend (13–15 November), a trail race in Ponta do Sol (22 November) and the Funchal Christmas lights switch-on (1 December). Most Funchal events don't need a car. Most of those elsewhere on the island are much easier with one.

This is a rolling guide to what to do in Madeira this month and the next. Each event has a date, place, cost and a verdict on whether to drive. Dates were checked on 31 October 2026. Check back, because we update the page as organisers confirm details.

A note on sources and parking: dates come from Events Madeira, the official tourism listing, wherever possible. The rest come from non-official guides, mainly madeira-web.com, which is not a government site. Items marked ⚠ rest on one source or have conflicting dates. We found no official 2026 traffic or parking plan for any event below, and we did not research parking at most venues. Treat parking notes as general advice and check the organiser or municipality before you go.

Madeira festivals: 31 October to 1 November

Chestnut Festival, Curral das Freiras (31 Oct – 1 Nov). It ends the day after our check date, so you can still go. On Sunday 1 Nov the municipal band opens at 09:30, mass is at 10:00 and the chestnut parade is at about 15:00. The Miss Castanha election is on Saturday at 20:00. No admission was announced. The last stretch is a mountain road and it gets busy. Parking is very limited, so arrive early. Without a car, SIGA bus line 81/181 links Funchal and Curral das Freiras, but check the timetable. Smaller chestnut fairs run at Avelanoso (31 Oct – 1 Nov) and Tendais (6–8 Nov).

Madeira Street Arts Festival (24 Oct – 1 Nov). Free, in Funchal, Calheta and Santa Cruz. On the last day one guide lists only Funchal and Calheta ⚠. In Funchal you can walk or take a bus or taxi.

Madeira events in November

Sport and outdoors

Rali Porto Santo (6–7 Nov). The final round of the Madeira Rally Championship, with stages including Porto Santo Line, Golfe, Serras Coral and a new reverse stage, Picos. You need a ferry or flight. Don't assume a Madeira rental car can travel there. Rental terms vary, so ask your rental company ⚠.

Mountain Bike Madeira Meeting (8–15 Nov). Based in Porto Moniz, with the Madeira Enduro Series on the final day. Porto Moniz is about 1 h 10 min from Funchal by car, so this is a car-day event.

Paul do Mar Regional Ramp Race (13–14 Nov). A hillclimb on the southwest coast ⚠ (single source). Expect local road closures, though we found no official notice. Drive time was not checked.

ADN Race Ponta do Sol (22 Nov). The regional trail championship, with a 32 km route (+1,800 m), a 13 km route (+800 m) and an 8 km walk. Ponta do Sol is about 35 minutes from Funchal by car. We found no start times or closure details, so check the event page.

Music, culture and food

Madeira Piano Fest, 11th edition (7, 8, 11, 14 and 15 Nov, 18:00). At the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre in Funchal, so no car is needed. We couldn't find the ticket price.

Madeira Classical Orchestra (OCM). The main concert is on 7 Nov at 18:00 at the Madeira Congress Centre (Beethoven and Mozart). Chamber dates follow on 14, 18 and 21 Nov, listed on Events Madeira.

São Martinho (10–11 Nov). The eve is the traditional night for roast codfish and wine, and the main church is São Martinho in Funchal. This comes from one guide ⚠, so ask your hotel about local events.

Sons e Sabores da Madeira (13–15 Nov). Local restaurants, folklore and live music in Praça Padre Gabriel Olavo Garcês, Santa Cruz, marking the start of Christmas there. Santa Cruz is next to the airport, so it pairs easily with a pickup. We estimate 5–10 minutes from the terminal. From Funchal, the airport is about 25 minutes.

NOMADIS Dance Project (20 Nov, 19:00). A debut at Fórum Machico. We did not check the drive time or parking for Machico, so look up the route first.

Santa Cruz Christmas lights (21 Nov). The lights stay on until 17 January 2027. It's an easy drive via the airport area, but evening parking is unchecked.

Madeira Fashion Weekend (21 Nov). At Quinta da Palmeira Gardens, Funchal. Ticket price unconfirmed.

Essência do Vinho (26–28 Nov). Tastings with commentary and chef show-cooking at the Pestana Casino Park (Sala Funchal). Tickets are €15. Producers include Henriques & Henriques, Justino's, Barbeito and Madeira Wine Company. It's in the Funchal hotel zone, so leave the car and take a taxi or Bolt back.

Not confirmed: the Ribeira Brava Christmas lights (one guide says 28 Nov, an older page 29 Nov; ask the municipality) and the Madeira Ladies Open W50 tennis at Quinta Magnólia, Funchal (listed as 8–15 Nov and as 15–22 Nov).

Madeira events in early December

Funchal Christmas lights switch-on (1 Dec)

The lights switch on at nightfall on 1 December and the programme runs into early January (most sources say about 10 January). Viewing is free. A 2025-season description gives roughly 18:00–01:00, and an aggregator lists the Avenida Arriaga Christmas market as 10:00 to midnight, so confirm both for 2026. Lights also go up around the island, including Machico, São Vicente and Santana, based on 2025 coverage.

Driving and parking: don't plan on driving into central Funchal after dark. The centre uses paid Blue Zone street parking, and parking near Avenida do Mar is very limited according to traveller reviews. Use a car park, or park further out and walk. A bus or taxi is easier.

More December events

  • Expo Natal Madeira (4–10 Dec). Second edition at Estádio do Marítimo, Funchal. Entry €2, with prize draws; pet-friendly.
  • Christmas Village (4 Dec – 6 Jan). Praça do Município, Funchal, for children and families.
  • Funchal a Brilhar convertible bus tour. A lights tour of about 50 minutes from Avenida do Mar. Last year it ran 5 Dec – 7 Jan with booking recommended ⚠. A 2026 repeat is unconfirmed.
  • Christmas Traditional Nights (9–23 Dec). On different dates in Funchal, Calheta, Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Santa Cruz, Santana and São Vicente. Check Events Madeira for your town.
  • Christmas Delicacies Display, Boaventura (12–13 Dec). São Vicente is about 50 minutes from Funchal and Boaventura is in that area, so allow 50 minutes or a little more.
  • OCM/DN Christmas Concert, Funchal (12–13 Dec). No car needed.

Coming up: dawn masses (Missas do Parto) 15–23 Dec, Funchal's Market Night at the Mercado dos Lavradores on 23 Dec (one third-party guide says nearby streets close from mid-afternoon; not an official notice), the São Silvestre race on 28 Dec and New Year's Eve fireworks on 31 Dec.

Whale watching, levadas and nature in winter

Whales and dolphins. Tours run all year from Funchal marina, so you don't need a car. In November and December common dolphins and pilot whales are likely, and sperm whales are possible. The sea is choppier than in summer. Operators quote very different success rates, so we won't give a number.

Levadas and viewpoints. We have no verified current status for walking routes. Autumn and winter bring more rain, and routes can close after bad weather, so check the official trail and levada status page on the day. Pico do Arieiro is roughly 30–50 minutes from Funchal, depending on traffic and weather. We found no flower season in this window beyond Christmas poinsettia displays in Funchal.

Plan your days by car: sample itineraries

Times are approximate. Check opening hours and prices first.

Funchal Christmas day (from 1 Dec). Daytime at Monte and the Botanical Garden. In the evening, park early or take a taxi, then walk the lights.

East day (13–15 Nov or 21 Nov). Start with Sons e Sabores or the lights in Santa Cruz, an easy drive from the airport area. Machico is a natural next stop, but we did not check its drive time or parking.

West day (22 Nov). Watch the ADN trail race in Ponta do Sol (about 35 min from Funchal), then stop at Ribeira Brava and Cabo Girão. Check Cabo Girão's opening and any fee first.

North day (12–13 Dec). Boaventura's Christmas display, then Santana. A guide says the Santana theme park is closed on Mondays ⚠, so verify.

Driving in Madeira: what to know on event days

  • Airport to Funchal: about 16–20 km, usually 20–25 minutes on the VR1.
  • Tolls: none on Madeira's roads or tunnels.
  • Tunnels: over 150, so use headlights. The longest is about 3.1 km (Ribeira Brava–São Vicente). GPS can drop out briefly.
  • Drive times from Funchal: Ponta do Sol 35 min, São Vicente 50 min, Santana 1 h, Porto Moniz 1 h 10 min.
  • Mountain roads: steep, narrow roads above Funchal are the hardest driving. Use low gears on descents.
  • Closures: during the 2026 Rali da Madeira, Avenida do Mar and Avenida Sá Carneiro closed from 14:00 to 22:30 on stage day. Treat that as a pattern, not a rule.
  • Fuel: we haven't confirmed current prices.

No car? SIGA buses cost €2.05 on board or €1.45 with a prepaid Giro card. The Aerobus from the airport costs €6.70 (€5.55 prepaid), about every 30–60 minutes, 08:30–22:00. A taxi is about €25–35 and Bolt €18–28. These come from a third-party guide and may have changed.

Booking a rental car during busy event periods

Demand is likely highest around the 1 December switch-on weekend and the Christmas–New Year week. The 8 December public holiday weekend is probably busy too, though that is not verified. If you want car rental in Madeira for those dates, don't leave it late.

  • Book ahead. RAC recommends booking ahead, though airport rental is possible.
  • Choose a small car for steep, narrow streets and tight parking.
  • Match pickup to your plans. Starting in Santa Cruz? Collect at the airport. Staying in Funchal? You may not need the car until later.
  • Ask about Porto Santo before assuming the car can take the ferry.
