Madeira is a small island with big climbs, short distances and a growing network of charging points. That combination makes it one of the easiest places in Europe to try an electric car on holiday, even if you have never driven one before. Short distances, easy range

Madeira is only around 57 km from east to west, and a fast network of expressways connects most of the island. A return trip from Funchal to Porto Moniz, on the far north-west coast, is roughly 100 km. Most holiday days are shorter than that.

For a modern electric car, that means a typical sightseeing day fits comfortably within a single charge. "Range anxiety" is much less of an issue here than on a long mainland road trip, especially if you top up while you eat, walk or sleep.

More than 100 charging stations across the island

Electromaps, one of the main EV charging apps, lists 104 charging stations in Madeira. Funchal has the most, with around 40, but charging is not limited to the capital. You will also find stations in:

In practice, charging works like this:

Find a nearby charger. Your car's navigation system or a map app can show you the closest stations.

When you are done, end the session as indicated on the charger, unplug and free up the bay for the next driver.

Fuel in Madeira is not cheap. For the week of 14 to 20 September 2026, the regional maximum price for 95 petrol is €2.010 per litre. A petrol car using 6 litres per 100 km would therefore cost around €12 in fuel for every 100 km.

A typical modern electric car uses around 16 kWh per 100 km. Public charging prices vary by operator and charger speed, but as an example, at €0.40 per kWh the same 100 km would cost around €6.40. Charging at your hotel can be even cheaper, while ultra-fast chargers are more expensive and best kept for when you really need a quick top-up.

Road tax of just €1 a day

Since 1 June 2026, every car rental contract in Madeira includes a mandatory regional usage fee, often referred to as the Madeira road tax. Automatic by design. Electric cars have no clutch and no gears to change. There is no risk of stalling on a steep village street and no need to juggle the clutch and handbrake on a hill start.
Instant power on climbs. An electric motor delivers its pulling power immediately, so steep ramps and mountain roads feel smooth and effortless, even with passengers and luggage.
Energy back on the way down. On long descents, regenerative braking slows the car while recovering energy for the battery. You use the brake pedal less, and some of the charge spent on the climb comes back as you descend.
Quiet and relaxed. With no engine noise, it is easier to enjoy the scenery, and arriving in a village or at a viewpoint feels calmer.

Climbing to high points such as Pico do Arieiro uses more energy than driving along the coast, so start mountain days with a good charge. Keep your speed low on descents and adjust the level of regenerative braking if the car allows it, so you can find the setting you feel most comfortable with.

Tips for a smooth electric trip

Plan one charging stop into longer days, ideally while you have lunch or go for a walk.
Charge overnight if your accommodation offers it, and start each day with a comfortable level.
Have a backup charger in mind when heading to quieter areas in the north and west.
Air conditioning and heating use some energy, but on short island trips the impact is usually small.
Check the charge level required at return in your rental agreement, and allow time to charge before going back to the airport if needed.
